Industry Overview


Since Apple iPhone debut in 2009, touch panel becomes a must requirement for a smart phone. Microsoft Win8 released in also provides touch function for a notebook PC. All in one PC follows the trend; and touch panel enabled AIO are also available in the market.

 

In the beginning; touch panel emerging from resistance type of touch; then capacitive type is dominating the market. Microsoft release multi touch requirement later; touch enabled 3 C products becomes very popular in the market. So does the touch panel industry.

 

In the early stage; touch panel industry is a new industry which uses ITO as sensor and either film or glass as substrate; on which the sensor is built in. There are many standard in the market such as G2, OGS, GFF, GF2, etc. All the structures are different with different layers of film or glass and bonding options. Different size panel products prefer different types of add on touch modules.

 

Microsoft and Intel in order to promote their products; they expect that 20% of the PC will have the touch function in 2013 and 2014 time frame. Microsoft also provides a touch standard for all OEMs to follows. The whole industry of touch are very hot in 2011, 2012 time frame with suppliers from Japan, Korea, Taiwan and China entering the market.

 

In 2013, 2014 time frame, people found that the touch enabled PC is not that popular in the market; with less than 15% penetration rate. One reason of the low rate is due to the high cost and low yield. The supply chain is working very hard to think how to resolve the issue. At this time; some touch module maker are suffering from losing money due to lower than expected demand in 2013.

 

In Cell and On Cell is later concept that people think is a better solution with low cost potential. However due to the technology barrier and patens issue; very few suppliers are able to release products based on In Cell and On Cell technology; Apple’s iPhone 5 is one example, however the complex structure and low yield prevents the technology from widely used in the market.
